Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will tie the series’ lore together, according to narrative director Darby McDevitt.
In the upcoming issue #176 of Official PlayStation Magazine, out Tuesday, June 2, the team sat down with McDevitt for a behind-the-scenes look at the next game in the Assassin’s Creed series.
One of the key questions McDevitt answers is how Valhalla will fit into the series’ deep lore, revealing that the Norse adventure will be a key “bridge” for the series’ lore between Assassin’s Creed Origins and the original Assassin’s Creed.
“We wanted to create a game that felt like it was beginning to bridge the gap between [what] we created with The Hidden Ones and The Order of Ancients in Origins. This is because we have always wanted to be historically rooted in the origin of the Knights Templar, even though these two groups have existed in our tradition for thousands of years.
“So this game will try to serve as a kind of bridge between Origins and [the original] Assassin’s Creed in a way where certain things that happen start to set the stage for what happens in most of the games that follow.
Of course, with so many games in the series now, it can sometimes be difficult to tie all these elements together, but McDevitt wants to make sure players also enjoy the connections they find between games.
“I wanted fans to be able to walk around the world and just about every corner, really feel like they were discovering something that increased their knowledge of everything. [series], so it really feels like there isn’t a wasted moment in this game, where you feel like every narrative discovery serves some sort of grand purpose. I hope there are several times where your jaw drops because you’re like, ‘Oh, that has to do with that. All right, that’s great.
The full OPM feature also reveals a lot more details about the game, such as how the narrative will play out in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and how important your location in England is to the story. As McDevitt explains, “We have some overlapping side stories in this game, just like any movie would have an A plot and a B plot. One of the ongoing stories is the evolution of your establishment and the people who live there. And as that grows, it has some growing pains, and as one of the leaders, you have to deal with that and you have to make tough decisions.
We can’t wait to see how Valhalla fits into the overall Assassins’ Creed verse and if you want to know more about Ubisoft’s next blockbuster then be sure to continue on. OPM #176 of June 2or subscribe below so you don’t miss any issues.
