How to fix a squeaky bed and get a good night’s sleep

There is nothing more frustrating than the sound of a bed creaking every time you move at night. Discordant noise will not only keep you awake, it can also affect the quality of your sleep if you lose valuable cooling.

That is why it is important for our health and well-being to know how to fix a squeaky bed. After all, we don’t want to feel even more tired the next morning, irritable, or unproductive at work. Also, if you share a squeaky bed with a partner, that’s double trouble!

So what causes a squeaky bed? Over time, your bed is subject to wear and tear, which will eventually cause it to creak and groan. Common culprits are a worn and outdated mattress, or it could be a squeaky bed frame or posts that need bracing. Either way, the sooner you know how to fix a squeaky bed, the better it will be for your overall sleep.

Although it may seem complicated at first, there are several things you can do to get rid of this annoying noise. Here are some helpful tips to fix a squeaky bed and restore the quality of your sleep.

If you’re looking to upgrade, you should also consider one of the best mattresses for a more comfortable sleep, or the best pillow for each sleeping position.

1. Turn your mattress

If your mattress squeaks, try rotating or flipping it. This will ensure that the deposit is evenly distributed. If the squeak is directly below where you sleep, rotating the mattress can help reduce pulling. Note that this will only apply to spring or hybrid types with metal springs. In any case, it is good to rotate the mattress every three months to get the most out of it and quality sleep.

If you need to replace a squeaky mattress, consider upgrading to a memory foam mattress because, unlike spring and hybrid (foam and spring) models, these won’t cause squeaking.

2. Try a mattress topper

If flipping doesn’t seem to work, try using one of the best mattress toppers to create a buffer. A mattress topper is an extra layer that will absorb some of the pressure from your body weight before it hits the noisy springs. This will also help dampen squeaks.

3. Tighten bed frame joints.

Squeaky bed frames are a common culprit for our sleep problems. Over time, your frame joints, usually connected by metal bolts or screws, can loosen. Look around your bed frame joints and tighten the bolts with a screwdriver or wrench. Once the joints are tightened this should minimize or eliminate excessive movement noise.

4. Lubricate the seals

If tightening the seals doesn’t seem to solve the problem, they may need lubrication. Apply lubricating oil to metal bed frames or any frame with metal bolts or screws. Products like WD-40 can be easily applied to joint areas, which can reduce squeaking. For those with wooden bed frames, you can try using candle wax or beeswax like this Wood Seasoning Beeswax Polish ($12, Amazon) that are friendlier to wood.

5. Cushion the bed slats

Bed slats can often rub against each other or against the frame, causing the frame to creak. Cushion the planks with towels, old socks, or any other soft object that can be placed between the planks. This will act as a damper to reduce any noise or squeaking.
