How to mute a chat thread in iOS 13

Apple iOS 13 added a number of new features to the iPhone and iPod Touch. Along with dark mode, video editing, and lyrics in Apple Music, iOS 13 introduces new options for managing email. Chief among them is the ability to disable chat threads.

You do not need to enable this feature to start using it. It’s built into the Mail app and you have two ways to use it. You use the first method in the inbox.

Open the Post app on your iPhone.

If you have more than one inbox, select the one that contains the thread you want to mute, or tap all mailboxes.

to slide left on the cable you want to disable.

press the Later option (it looks like three dots in a gray circle).

Faucet Silence.

Muted conversations have an icon that looks like a crossed out bell.

You can reactivate a thread from the same menu.

You only have to disable a thread on a single device. Settings are transferred to other devices using your Apple ID.

Decide what happens to masked emails

In addition to muting a thread, iOS 13 also lets you decide what happens to new messages you receive in a thread that you’ve muted. Follow these steps to set this preference.

Open Settings.

To select Post.

Faucet Muted thread action.

Select the desired option.

  • Mark as read it keeps new emails in your inbox but doesn’t show them as new. Use it if you want to read messages later but don’t need an alert every time you get a new one.
  • Archive or delete it is for messages you do not intend to read. When a new message arrives in a thread that you’ve disabled, this option moves it directly to your Archived folder or Trash, depending on how your inbox is configured.

Why disable an email thread

If you get notifications for every message that arrives in your inbox, having an overly active conversation can get boring. You can turn off notifications from the nuisance thread without missing out on other email alerts you receive.

Before this feature, your only options were to manage all notifications or turn them off entirely. Disabling a single thread gives you more control over the alerts that make it to your lock screen.
