This article explains how to use Messenger when you’re not using Facebook, including how to set up the Messenger app on your device if you have a previously disabled account.
These instructions assume Messenger for iOS or Messenger for Android is installed on your mobile device.
Using Messenger with a disabled Facebook account
Before December 2019, you only needed a phone number to create a Facebook Messenger account. Now you need a Facebook account, but it doesn’t have to be active. If you previously deactivated your Facebook account, you can use it to create a Messenger account without first reactivating it. All you have to do is sign in to Messenger with your disabled account credentials and click or tap Access.
Use Messenger without a Facebook account
If you had a Facebook account that you permanently deleted, or if you’ve never had a Facebook account before, you can create a new one and then deactivate it after setting up Messenger.
Open the Messenger app and touch Create a new account.
A dialog may appear asking you to use your Facebook.com information to sign in. press on Continue.
A browser window opens asking you to create a new Facebook account. Fill in the fields and press Following on each tab until you reach the last one and press Registry.
Be sure to use the first and last name that you want to appear on your Messenger account. You must verify your account with a code sent by SMS or email.
Creating a Facebook account also creates a Messenger account, which you can start using right away.
Messenger automatically displays your Facebook profile picture next to your name. Unfortunately, you can’t upload or change your profile picture on Messenger. You must do this through your Facebook account through the website or mobile application.
Optionally, deactivate your Facebook account and continue using Messenger as you would if your Facebook account was still active.
Be sure to deactivate, not delete, your Facebook account. If you delete your account, you also delete your Messenger account and all your messages. A disabled Facebook account is the absolute minimum you need to use Messenger.
Can you contact someone on Messenger without being a friend?
Yes, you can message someone on Facebook Messenger if they are not friends. However, your message may appear in their message requests and they will only see it if they mark it there. To add phone contacts to Messenger, select Phone number > Download Contacts.
How many Messenger accounts can you have?
You can add up to five Messenger accounts, as long as they follow Facebook’s naming policies and community standards. To add a Messenger account, tap your profile picture in the Messenger app > change account > Add an account > enter your data.
Can people find me on Messenger without Facebook?
Yes. People can search for you by name, email address, or phone number in the Messenger app. To control your privacy settings, go to Messenger and touch your profile picture > Privacy > message delivery and choose who can send you message requests.
