Moon Knight theory suggests heartbreaking connection between Marc and Steven

After we only get a glimpse of Oscar Isaac’s maverick persona in the opening, Moon Knight Episode 2 features some revelations about Marc Spector. “Summon The Suit” introduces his wife Layla (May Calamawy), and some details about his questionable past as a mercenary are exposed.

We also get to see him in action fighting Ammit’s jackal, and there are plenty of interactions between Marc and Steven that show just how different they are. The Marvel Show has yet to provide answers as to why they’re tied together, but one fan theory suggests there could be a bigger reason behind their polar personalities.

Moon Knight Theory: Steven Grant Is A Manifestation Of Marc Spector’s Guilt

While posting on Reddit, a fan suggested that Steven could be a manifestation of everything Marc wished he had been. Writing after the episode aired, they wrote, “So it seems like Steven is the manifestation of all of Marc’s guilt. Not just when it comes to Layla or her past, even the little things like being vegan or having a relationship with his mother.

The message continued: “All the things Marc would have liked to do better are represented by Steven.” It goes through particular moments where Marc and Steven make opposite decisions at all times.

For example, when Steven learns that Layla and Marc are planning a divorce, he replies, “I’ll never get a divorce.” Later, he, too, attempts to reverse Marc’s efforts to distance himself from her by enlisting her help in the scarab mystery.

Another revealing moment comes when Layla wonders if Steven managed to reconcile with his mother after she mentioned staying at his apartment. Layla asks, “So are you talking again?” Steven is shocked, not knowing that they ever had a fight. It comes after we see an attentive Steven leaving endless voice messages on his mother’s answering machine.

With these family problems plaguing him, it seems interesting that Marc has a different version of himself without these problems. Could he have manifested a part of himself apart from his anxieties?

Other fans agreed that this theory carried some weight as they shared their thoughts on what was going on. In response, one wrote: “Marc is clearly overwhelmed by the things he has done and seems to have been forced to do a lot of shit with the threat of his wife taking over the avatar mantle if she refuses. .

Another suggested that Steven loving Layla’s favorite poet, Marceline Desbordes-Valmore, could also be a manifestation of this. They theorized: “Loving his wife’s favorite poet is another example I’ve noticed. I bet he asked Marc to read this about 100 times. A third user also wondered if Steven could be a manifestation of Marc’s “nice side.”

Isaac suggested that one of his high hopes with the series was to portray dissociative identity disorder “honestly”. He told Vanity Fair, “I’m so proud that our show provides this real, honest look at what it’s like to deal with mental illness with empathy.”

We may see more dissections of this in the future, as well as what it means for Marc and Steven to experience different versions of themselves.
