Moon Knight Episode 5 unlocks two key questions we’ve been asking ourselves since the start of the Marvel series: how did Marc Spector develop his alternate personality, Steven Grant, and how did he become the avatar of the ancient Egyptian god Khonshu? Warning: spoilers ahead.
“For me, it was really important that everything about the show, visually, thematically, be an outward expression of an internal struggle that Steven and Marc have. The idea of Khonshu, to me, was more about symbolic power than what Khonshu represented. Oscar Isaac, who plays both Marc and Steve, told Total Film when we caught up with the actor ahead of the series premiere.
“Whether it’s the voice of addiction, or the voice of revenge and punishment towards those who abused him when he was very, very young, because dissociative identity disorder, for the most part, occurs as a result of sustained abuse of a very young age. , and this is the case of Marc.
In episode 5, the hippo goddess Taweret he tells the pair that they must revisit their past in order to balance their souls so they can safely cross over into the Egyptian afterlife. During these various trips in the past, we learned that when he was a child, Marc’s younger brother drowned and his mother blamed Marc for the accident. The abuse Marc suffered from his mother caused him to withdraw into the Steven persona.
Another flashback shows Marc about to commit suicide after a mercenary mission gone wrong, the same incident that resulted in the death of Layla’s father. Just as he is about to pull the trigger, he hears the voice of Khonshu, who recruits him as his avatar.
“For him, that vengeful God who gave him life just when he was perhaps going to end his life, is like this idea of punishment, of justice, and then he runs into the idea of that other form of justice, which is preventive. Isaac continues. “It speaks to the parts of him that say, ‘Well, if you had never been born, none of this would have happened.’ There were just very clear psychological connections that helped guide the performance. [as Marc and Steven].”
