Sam Elliott apologizes for calling The Power of the Dog a “piece of s*** Western”

Sam Elliott apologized for the comments about the power of the dog which he did on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast earlier this year, calling the film “a piece of Western shit.”

“I told podcaster WTF that I thought Jane Campion was a brilliant director, and I want to apologize to the cast of Power of the Dog, all brilliant actors,” Elliott said. Deadline. “And especially Benedict Cumberbatch. I can only say I’m sorry and I’m sorry. Am.”

“I was not very eloquent about it. I didn’t put it very well,” she continued. “And I said things that hurt people and I feel bad about it. The gay community has been amazing to me throughout my career. And I mean my entire career, before I started in this town. Friends at all levels and all job descriptions to this day. I’m sorry I hurt one of those friends and someone I loved. And anyone else for the words I used.

In his original comments, the actor said, “What the fuck is this woman? By the way, she’s a brilliant director. I love her work, her previous work. But what the hell does this damn woman over there in New Zealand know? And why the hell does he shoot this movie in New Zealand and call it Montana and say, “That’s right.” Damn, that pissed me off, dude.

He also added: “Everyone is running around in leggings and no shirt. There are all these allusions to homosexuality throughout this fucking movie.

The film competed for 12 awards at this year’s Oscars, including best picture and nominations for Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemmons and Kirsten Dunst, with Jane Campion winning best director.
